Plain old white bread...
Ingredients
1 package dry yeast
2 1/2 cups bread flour
1 cup scalded milk
1 T sugar
1 tsp salt
2 T butter
1/8 cup warm water (105-115 degrees)
The Preparation
- In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add the sugar and stir well. Let sit for 10 minutes.
- Stir in milk, salt and butter.
- Gradually add flour. Mixture will be quite stiff. Let dough rest for about 15 minutes.
- Knead dough on a floured board until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Lightly grease a large bowl and place dough into the bowl. Cover. Let rise until doubled in size (about an hour).
- Shape dough into a loaf on a lightly oiled board. Place dough into loaf pan.
- Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Five minutes before bread is done, rub the top with butter.
- Let the bread sit in the pan for five minutes. Then, remove from pan and let cool on a wire rack.
- The bread will sound hollow when tapped.
